Match Reports

Regional Utd vs Mungret Regional

Regional’s Under 18 Youths side hosted local rivals Mungret-Regional in a league match, in one of the few games to survive the atrocious weather over the weekend. Despite the weather conditions this was a cracker of a game as our lads gained top spot in the league with a 4-3 victory.

Although the scoreline might indicate a close affair in truth our lads were coasting in the first half and led 3-0 at half time with goals from Tommy Frawley, Paul Sheehan and a beautifully worked goal which Fergal Blake finished off with aplomb. However within a minute of the restart Mungret were awarded a dubious penalty, which they scored but within minutes we had regained our three goal cushion with a good finish from Jack Walsh. We were dominating the midfield through Fergal Blake, Brian Murphy, Tommy Frawley and Andy McDonnell while Stephen White and David Cowpar were superb at the heart of our defence. Mike Cussen in goals had very little to deal with and Shane Byrne and Evan O'Grady in the full back positions pushed forward at every opportunity. But Mungret pulled another goal back with a ridiculous offside decision that wasn't given and unbelievably they were awarded a second penalty for a hand ball that was a plain case of "ball to hand", and so instead of being in the clear we found ourselves just the one goal ahead. But, whereas in these notes last week this side was criticised for underachieving and not playing to their best, they rolled up their sleeves and battled to the end and cetainly if they can maintain that type of spirit they will surely dictate what way league honours go at the end of the season. Well done to all concerned.

Two of our youth players, David Cowpar and Andy McDonnell have been selected in the Limerick Oscar Traynor Youths Squad who play Cork District League on Wednesday night next at Turners Cross in Cork. All at the club wish them well and to all the Limerick squad and managers as they face a very difficult task to overcome Cork on their home turf.

Regional Utd vs Corbally United
(Ger Ryan Youth Cup 25-Oct-2009)

On Sunday afternoon our youths were at home to Corbally United in the Ger Ryan Youth Cup and ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline. Whilst not trying to take away from a fighting and tenacious Corbally performance, it has to be said that the Regional Youth side are guilty of underperforming and they need to up the ante or the season will get away from them. Corbally took the lead when a corner kick was not dealt with properly leaving Philip Lavin with an easy header from close in. Regional pushed on with David Cowpar and Andy McDonnell in the middle of the park and from a Jack Walsh cross the ball broke to Jack O'Donovan to level matters. But instead of pushing on from there Regional seemed to ease off on the pressure and from another corner which again the Regional defence failed to deal with Corbally took a 2-1 lead to the break. The second half started with Regional at long last upping the tempo but Corbally added a soft third goal and now the onus was on Regional to go on all out attack. And that they did and if they had only played the first half in the same manner that they played the last twenty there could have been a very different outcome. With less than ten minutes to go substitute Pat McCarthy pulled a goal back but try as they might they just couldn't get the equaliser. It finished 3-2 to Corbally United.
