Match Reports

Our U-11Bs were at home to Parkville in what was a very sporting game. Parkville took an early and surprising lead against the run of paly leaving the Regional players quite stunned. However through great midfield play from Liam Harrington and Mark Edwards, Regional opened their account with a goal from Morgan Hanley. A second goal before half time by Mark Edwards settled Regional well. Regional dominated in the second half as Parkville could only field 9 players for the match. Liam Harrington scored early after the restart and another from Cian Cusack which came about as the result of substantial pressure by Regional on Parkville's tightened defence. A second goal from Liam Harrington settled the result. Parkville's lack of a full team narrowed their options and therefore the overall result of 5-1 did not do them justice as it could well have been a different result otherwise. Man-of-the-match for Regional was Liam Harrington.

Due to the atrocious weather conditions over the weekend all schoolboy matches were called off . Regional had one match to report on as our U-11s, managed by John McNamara and David Greer, travelled to Fenit, Co Kerry for a National Cup game.

It was an extremely windy day and Regional played the first half with the wind behind them but within a minute Fenit Samphires scored as a result of a deflection off a Regional defender. However heads didn't drop and Regional fought back and deservedly drew level with a good goal from Brian Ryan. About 10 minutes later Rory Casserly was fouled by the Fenit keeper and the resulting penalty was put away by Brian Ryan with a low hard shot to the right of the keeper. Both teams had ample chances to score and it was Fenit who scored with 5 minutes to the half time whistle to leave it 2-2 at the break. For the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half Regional looked the stronger of the two sides but despite several opportunities they failed to score, hitting the post on one occasion. Fenit played a very defensive second half getting all their midfield players behind the ball and used the advantage of the wind to attack on the break. The wind increased considerably in Fenit's favour for the last ifteen minutes and they managed to go a goal up with 10 minutes remaining. Regional fought back and spent the next several minutes deep in the Fenit half but without result. Sean McNamara played excellently in goals for Regional throughout the match but was extremely unlucky when a kick out from goal against the wind was lobbed over his head by a Fenit player as he ran back to his goal line. The final score was 4-2 to Fenit but well done to all concerned and our Man-Of-The-Match, Sean McNamara.

On Saturday morning our U-11B side were away to Janesboro in dull and wet conditions but played on an excellent surface. The eventual score does not highlight the overall competitive game played between both sides. Regional United only had the bare eleven players and to a man they gave a great account of themselves. Regional got an early goal through Mark Edwards and pushed on from there with goals from Paul Collins and Morgan Hanly in the first half and Cian Cusack and Matthew Stenson in the second half. Regional were strong in midfield and in control of the match from this line and having the bare number of players they were inspired from start to finish. Despite the 5-1 scoreline the Janesboro goalies had a great game. Man-of-the-match for Regional was Arron Cosgrove with Jimmy Fehily a close second.
